SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland have jointly applied for planning permission for the Sheskin South Wind Farm project, which is set to be located in Co Mayo, Ireland. The proposed 126 MW wind farm is expected to include 21 turbines and could provide clean energy to power up to 83,000 homes in the region while offsetting an estimated 88 million kg of harmful carbon emissions annually.
The companies have also committed to a Community Benefit Fund, which will support local initiatives in the area during the wind farm's first 15 years of operation. The project's investment decision is yet to be confirmed and is subject to approval by Irish authorities. A proposed grid connection planning application is scheduled to be submitted to authorities in Q4 2023.
SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland's announcement is part of their efforts to contribute to Ireland's renewable energy goals, which aim to achieve 70% renewable electricity by 2030.
