SSE Renewables has announced the completion of the installation of the final turbine at the 443 MW Viking Wind Farm in Shetland, UK. The project will comprise 103 Vestas V117 4.3 MW wind turbines, generating up to 1.8 TWh of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to almost half a million British homes.
The turbine installation began in February 2023 and was completed in just over six months. The project remains on track for completion in summer 2024, with commissioning works set to continue over the next year.
The Viking Wind Farm is expected to provide several benefits to the UK's energy sector, including a significant reduction in carbon emissions and an increase in renewable energy generation. When fully operational, the wind farm will have the capacity to generate 443 MW of installed wind-powered capacity, making it one of the largest onshore wind farms in the UK.
