Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has submitted a planning application for an energy storage project in southwestern Scotland. With a total capacity of 49.9 MW, the Holmston Farm project would be built near the town of Ayr in South Ayrshire, pending approval from the local council.

Energy storage has been identified as a crucial element in balancing and securing the electricity grid, while also supporting the expansion of renewable energy. The new project is seen as an important step towards achieving the UK's ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

If approved, the Holmston Farm project is expected to play a key role in enabling the rollout of zero-carbon renewable energy across the country. “Increasing the installed capacity of energy storage is essential to enabling and accelerating the rollout of zero-carbon energy to support the UK’s net-zero emissions target by 2050, and if consented, Holmston Farm will play an integral part in allowing us to achieve this,” said Jenna Folkard, development project manager at RES.

RES is a UK-based company with projects located in 11 different countries. Its operations cover a variety of renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, green hydrogen, energy transmission and distribution, and energy storage.
