The Department of Planning, Industry, and Environment (DPIE) of New South Wales has granted development approval to the proposed 500 MW/1,000 MWh Wallerawang 9 Battery energy storage project promoted by Greenspot.
The construction of the battery storage project would take about 12-24 months. It is anticipated that construction will be carried out in stages with the first stage likely consisting of a 300 MW storage capacity and the second stage scheduled to be constructed within five years with a capacity of 200 MW.
The project will be constructed on about a 40-ha area of the decommissioned Wallerawang power station which has been shut down since 2014. the project is estimated to cost approximately AUD400 million (US$289.32 million). The battery has the capacity to power up to 187,000 homes and will be connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via Transgrid's existing 330 kV Wallerawang Substation which is adjacent to the site.
