Shell Energy has purchased the rights to develop the 500 MW Wallerawang 9 battery energy storage system (BESS) project in New South Wales, Australia.
The BESS will be located on the site of the Wallerawang power station, where two 500 MW coal-fired generating units were shut down in 2014. It will link to the neighboring 330kV Wallerawang Substation.
As part of the deal, Shell Energy will be responsible for the grid connection process and, pending final investment decision, plans to build, own, and manage the project on 20 ha of Greenspot-leased land.
