BHP has signed a large-scale renewable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Alinta Energy's 45 MW solar and 35 MW battery energy storage project in order to halve its emissions from the generation of electricity used to power its Western Australia Iron Ore port facilities in Port Hedland, Australia by the end of 2024.
The construction of the solar and energy storage project is expected to commence in December 2022, pending final regulatory permissions.
Once completed, it is anticipated that 100% of BHP's port facilities' forecasted average daytime energy requirements will be met by solar generation. The remaining power requirements will be supplied by the integrated battery energy storage system and market access to Alinta Energy's existing gas-fueled power station facilities.
