Ørsted A/S has been granted a Natura 2000 permit for its 1.5 GW Skane offshore wind project in Sweden. The permit was given by the county administrative board of Sweden’s southern county of Skane, which recommended the government approve the wind farm in December 2022. The wind farm could begin providing power as early as 2029 if the government makes a prompt decision.
The Skane offshore wind project is located near the Natura 2000 area of Southwest Skane's ocean waters. Of all of Ørsted's projects in the country, it has advanced the most in the permitting process.
The project is part of Ørsted's plan to achieve 50 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030. It is also aligned with Sweden's goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2045, as the Skane project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 million tonnes annually.
