German technology provider Sunfire has been commissioned by Perstorp Group and Uniper to build the 30 MW 'Project Air', a pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant that will be located in Stenungsund, Sweden.
The project seeks to produce sustainable methanol for chemical manufacturing through the use of circular production methods. Perstorp will build a Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) plant that will convert CO2 emissions captured from its operations as well as other residue streams, biogas, and renewable hydrogen to methanol. Sunfire will supply the green hydrogen through its pressurized alkaline electrolyzer.
On January 19, CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency) approved funding from the EU Innovation Fund for the project, which is a critical enabler for the European chemicals industry to become carbon neutral.
