The New South Wales (NSW) government has launched its fifth renewable energy zone, the Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), which will be centered around the steel city of Wollongong south of Sydney in Australia.
The State's Energy Corporation (EnergyCo) has been appointed as the infrastructure planner of the newest zone which will have an intended network capacity for the network infrastructure of 1 GW. Illawara REZ has received a significant number of interest in 2022 with up to 44 renewables generation and storage project applications totaling 17 GW and investment potential of about AUD43 billion (US$28.9 million).
EnergyCo will now set out the intended size of, its location, and the infrastructure that will make up the Illawarra REZ which runs down the coastline from Wollongong to Shellharbour and west to Dapto capturing existing infrastructure such as Port Kembla, Dapto Substation, and the Tallawarra Power Station.
