Swedish renewable energy developer OX2 has started construction of the Muswellbrook Solar Farm & Battery in New South Wales, Australia, following a sod-turning ceremony. The project comprises a 135 MW solar farm and a 100 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and is located about 2.5 km east of Muswellbrook within the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone.
The hybrid project is being developed predominantly on land formerly associated with coal mining operations. It is expected to generate around 347 GWh of clean electricity annually, equivalent to the electricity needs of approximately 52,000 homes. The battery will help store electricity and improve grid reliability in the region.
OX2 developed the project in partnership with Idemitsu Australia, which will remain the long-term landholder. The project has also secured a long-term hybrid power purchase agreement with Amazon, covering both the solar generation and battery storage. Financing was arranged by MUFG, while an Equans Solar & Storage and Bouygues Construction Australia joint venture is the preferred EPC contractor.
