OX2 has secured EPBC environmental approval to build the 135 MW Muswellbrook solar and storage project in New South Wales, Australia.

The project site lies next to the Muswellbrook Coal Mine, which ceased operations in 2022, on land largely owned by Idemitsu Australia. Being developed in collaboration with Idemitsu, the solar and storage scheme has already secured planning approval and forms part of a broader strategy to transform the former mine into an industrial and clean energy hub. As one of the first initiatives to repurpose a coal mining site for renewable generation, it serves as a pilot project for the Upper Hunter Valley’s energy transition.

The Muswellbrook project marks OX2’s second venture in Australia to secure EPBC approval, coming after the 90 MW Summerville solar and storage development, which was cleared in July. Across the country, OX2 is advancing a portfolio of 3.7 GW spanning solar, wind, and storage projects in various stages of development and construction, alongside an additional 390 MW currently under management.
