The New York State Public Service Commission has approved a transmission line project that will transfer power from the proposed 924 MW Sunrise Wind Farm off the coast of Long Island to the state's existing electrical grid. The 25-mile offshore/onshore transmission line will connect the wind farm to an existing substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County.
The transmission project includes a 5.2-mile high-voltage, 320-kV, DC underwater export cable bundle that will enter New York State territorial waters 3 nautical miles from land. The transmission line will then switch to an onshore cable and travel 17.2 miles to an onshore converter station.
Before work begins, the Commission must approve the environmental management and construction plan for the transmission project.
