Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG (LEAG) has announced plans to develop a 24 MW onshore wind farm near an abandoned lignite mine in Lusatia, northeast Germany.

On July 22, an application was submitted to the State Agency for the Environment in Brandenburg. The wind farm will be constructed by EP New Energies GmbH (EPNE). After a lengthy review and authorization procedure, EPNE intends to finish building the facility in about three years. The wind park's four turbines are to be constructed close to the Cottbuser Ostsee which is an artificial lake that is currently being developed on the grounds of the former open-pit lignite mine Cottbus-Nord.

The wind farm is expected to be able to generate approximately 60,000 MWh of green power, which is equivalent to the amount of energy utilized by approximately half of the homes in the city of Cottbus.
