LEAG has formed a partnership with ESS Tech to develop a 50 MW energy storage project in Germany. LEAG and ESS plan to initiate the EUR200 million (US$218.6 million) project to construct an iron redox flow battery at the Boxberg power plant in Baden-Württemberg, after agreeing on the partnership’s terms in Q3 of this year.
Iron redox flow batteries are a viable alternative to lithium-based batteries as they are easily scalable and non-flammable, making them a suitable component for static energy storage plants.
The project aims to upgrade energy storage technology in the region, and the commissioning of the iron redox flow battery is scheduled for 2027. The battery will enable LEAG to store excess energy which can be used during peak demand, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the energy supply and reducing carbon emissions.
