The German energy company MVV Energie AG has been awarded an order to install the first solar photovoltaic system in Mannheim, Germany. The installation is part of the initiative which aims to add 40 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity on the roofs of buildings and plots owned by the city. It is being implemented by sMArt City Mannheim GmbH which was created by the City of Mannheim and MVV Energie in 2021.

The first solar installation, which covers an area of 150 square meters and has a capacity of 63 kWp, has already been installed on the roof of a kindergarten. The kindergarten will use the power it generates to meet its own needs. The excess electricity will be fed into the public grid. The second bundle of solar installations with an annual output of 660 GWh is already planned.

The City of Mannheim plans to use only renewable sources of energy to power all of its residential and commercial properties by the year 2027. MVV Energie will install the PV plants at 19 additional locations, the majority of which are kindergartens. These plants are anticipated to generate nearly 860 GWh of environmentally friendly electricity and to offset 450 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
