Enviromena has received approval from Hartlepool Borough Council to proceed with the High Barns Solar Farm in Elwick, County Durham.
This project includes a 49.9MW AC solar farm and a 25MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Once operational, it is expected to generate enough clean energy annually to power approximately 25,915 homes and offset around 14,500 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 8,620 cars from the road. Beyond its environmental benefits, the project aims to enhance local biodiversity through the improvement of existing hedgerows and the creation of wildflower meadows and grassland habitats beneath the solar panels. Enviromena also plans to collaborate with the council to improve the public right-of-way network around the site. This development aligns with the UK government's target of achieving at least 45GW of operational solar power generation by 2030, contributing significantly to national net-zero goals.
