ENGIE has launched the construction phase of its 1,000 MW Renewable Investment Plan, which begins with the first three projects located in the Antofagasta Region. The projects are Calama Wind Farm, Capricorn Solar Plant, which has already begun its construction, and the Tamaya Solar Plant, whose work is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of next year. These first three projects will have a capacity of 370 MW and will generate about 1,000 direct jobs at peak hiring times.
The Calama Wind Farm (150 MW) has 36 4.5 MW turbines, with blades over 70 meters long and with a hub height of 94m. It is one of the first in Chile to occupy machines of similar dimensions, generating 450 GWh per year. The start of operation is expected in mid-2021.
The Solar Capricorn Park (100 MWp) is located in the commune of Antofagasta and is beginning its construction. The start of operation is expected by the beginning of 2021.
Meanwhile, the Solar Tamaya park (120 MWp) is located in the commune of Tocopilla and the beginning of its construction is planned for the first quarter of 2020.
The area occupied between both solar projects will be equivalent to 380 football fields and will consider the installation of 551,000 solar panels.
The initial investment in the three schemes will reach around US$300 million.
