Amea Power has started building a 24 MW solar project on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, around 450 km from the capital Kampala in the West Nile region of northwestern Uganda.

The project will be executed by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a fully AMEA-owned company registered in Uganda. Located on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, Uleppi Sub-county, Madi Okollo District, approximately 450 km from Kampala, the project features a 1X24 MVA 33/132 kV transformer substation/switchyard. Power will be transmitted via the new Lira-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua 132 kV line, managed by Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), the off-taker. Upon completion, this project will be the largest utility-scale grid-connected solar PV installation in the West Nile Region.

The project, with a USD 19 million investment, secured financing at COP28 from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), with support from the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) via its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF). Scheduled for commissioning in Q3 2025, this solar PV plant will be AMEA Power’s first asset in Uganda, generating approximately 53,940 MWh annually, powering over 192,640 households, and cutting carbon emissions by 26,600 tonnes per year. Key agreements were signed in September 2023.
