ACWA Power has signed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Mauritania and SOMELEC in Nouakchott, Mauritania, for the development, financing, construction, and operation of the 230 MW N'Diago Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant.
The signing formally initiates the development of Mauritania's first large-scale gas-fired Independent Power Producer (IPP), representing a significant step toward expanding private sector involvement in the country's electricity sector. The project will provide 230 MW of reliable baseload power through high-efficiency Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology, utilizing domestic natural gas resources to supply the national grid. The plant is expected to enhance grid reliability, improve energy security, and achieve greater fuel efficiency with lower emissions than conventional thermal power generation.
Acwa is experiencing rapid growth, with a portfolio of 111 assets in operation, advanced development, or under construction, representing SAR 468.9 billion / USD 125 billion. The company can generate 98 GW of power (52.3 GW from renewables) and manages 9.7 million m³/day of desalinated water in 16 countries. N’diago expands Acwa’s presence in the African continent, reinforcing its commitment to regions in the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved US$302.9 million in financing to support the 225 kV Mauritania-Mali electricity interconnection and solar power project.
