Company description

SOMELEC (Société Mauritanienne d'Électricité) is the state-owned electricity utility of Mauritania, established in 2001 following the separation of the former national water and electricity company, SONELEC. Reorganized into the Groupe SOMELEC in January 2024, the company is responsible for the generation, procurement, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity across urban and peri-urban areas throughout the country. Operating a diversified power portfolio comprising thermal, hydroelectric, wind, and solar generation, SOMELEC manages an installed capacity of approximately 490 MW, serves more than 407,000 customers through 87 commercial centers, and operates in 58 cities with a workforce of over 2,280 employees. Fully owned by the Government of Mauritania, the utility is committed to expanding electricity access, improving grid reliability, integrating renewable energy, and supporting the country's growing electricity demand and socio-economic development.
