The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has received bids for the development of the Bilaj Al Jazayer Independent Power Project (BAJ Solar IPP), a utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) facility planned in Bahrain.
Two firms—ACWA Power and Yellow Door Energy—have submitted proposals for the project, which is planned to deliver a minimum generation capacity of 100 MW (AC). The Bilaj Al Jazayer Solar IPP will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) structure. The chosen developer will oversee the full project lifecycle over 25 years, including development, financing, construction, operations, maintenance, decommissioning, and restoration of the site.
The proposed solar plant will utilize established photovoltaic (PV) technology along with utility-scale inverters optimized for reliable performance in local environmental conditions. The scope also covers the development of related infrastructure, including internal roads, access routes, and other facilities necessary for efficient plant operations. Upon completion, the Bilaj Al Jazayer Solar IPP is set to play an important role in advancing Bahrain’s clean energy goals, contributing toward the Kingdom’s aim of reaching a 20% share of renewables in its energy mix by 2035.
