Heineken España and Engie España have commissioned a 30 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with 68 MWh of storage capacity in Seville, Spain.
This EUR21 million (US$21.9 million) project, co-financed with FEDER funds and overseen by IDAE, covers 8 ha. It drastically reduces the brewery's fossil gas consumption by over 60% using solar thermal technology. The integration of thermodynamic concepts and CSP technology doubles superheated water production, ensuring energy reliability. Plus, it utilizes water as a heat transfer medium, eliminating the need for environmentally risky synthetic oils.
Heineken and Engie collaborate through a Thermal Purchase Agreement (TPA). Heineken manages energy usage and offers the land, while Engie supplies renewable energy at a fixed rate. After the 20-year agreement concludes, Heineken will own the solar thermal plant.
