Vattenfall has made the final investment decision to develop a 76 MW solar agrivoltaic project in Tützpatz, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. This scheme is being set up without any state support and is expected to make a significant contribution to the country's renewable energy goals.
Agrivoltaics is the innovative combination of sustainable agriculture and solar power generation on the same agricultural land. Critics of open-space photovoltaics fear that expansion could jeopardize food-producing agricultural land. Fortunately, the relatively new technology of agrivoltaics offers a potential solution to this conflict, allowing for the harmonious coexistence of agricultural use and photovoltaics.
For the first time, Vattenfall is pioneering an innovative land use strategy on a commercial basis with partners. The goal of the project in Tützpatz is to combine various module types on different mounting systems with compatible agricultural uses across an area of 95 ha, thus gaining valuable practical experience for future commercial projects of this kind. Construction of the project is slated to commence in the early summer of 2023.
