Return announced the commencement of construction on the Antares battery energy storage system (BESS) in Waddinxveen, Netherlands.
A 100 MW / 200 MWh battery energy storage system in Waddinxveen—designed to supply enough power for half of The Hague—is expected to become operational by mid-2026, playing a vital role in supporting the stability of the Dutch electricity grid. The project is primarily financed by ING through multiple funding arrangements, with additional contributions from Meewind and Nationaal Groenfonds. Technical implementation is being carried out by Alfen and SPIE Nederland, while Vattenfall is among several off-takers responsible for utilizing the system’s capacity.
Key Stakeholders:
Developer: Return
Technical Partners: Alfen and SPIE Nederland
Financial Backers: ING (primary financier), Meewind, and Nationaal Groenfonds
Capacity Off-taker: Vattenfall will manage and optimize 50 MW / 100 MWh of the system's capacity under an eight-year agreement.
