Corre Energy has established a joint venture (JV) with SemperPower to develop a two-hour 320 MW battery storage system (BESS) project in Zuidwending, in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands.
The two companies have formed a 50/50 joint venture, initially investing EUR7 million (US$7.6 million) to deliver a 320 MW, two-hour battery project with a total capacity of 640 MWh. They plan to use salt caverns at the site to create a 320 MW compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility, with a maximum discharge duration of approximately 3.5 days and a target start date around the end of 2026. The project will be hydrogen fuel-enabled from the beginning. In January 2023, Dutch energy supplier Eneco signed a 15-year offtake agreement for the ZW1 project and will manage the entire output of the storage site for Corre Energy. The commercial operations at the proposed Dutch energy storage facility are expected to begin in 2026.
