Boom Power, a UK-based renewable energy developer, has received planning approval from the UK government to build a 238 MW Fenwick Solar Farm with co-located energy storage near the villages of Fenwick, Moss, Topham, and Sykehouse in South Yorkshire, England.
The project, led by BOOM Power, involves constructing a ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) power station with a total capacity of up to 237.5 MW. It also includes a co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which will help store electricity generated by the solar panels so it can be delivered to the grid when demand is high. The solar farm will occupy a 536-hectare area in the Fenwick/Doncaster region. It is designed to connect into the National Electricity Transmission System via an existing substation at Thorpe Marsh, meaning the clean power it produces will flow directly into the wider UK electricity grid. The planning and design have been shaped to integrate with the local landscape and minimise environmental impacts where possible.
Because of its size and importance to the energy system, Fenwick Solar Farm is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), so approval came from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero rather than local authorities like Doncaster Council. Construction could begin as early as 2029, and the farm is expected to connect to the national electricity grid by 2032. Once operational, it would generate enough carbon-free electricity to power around 75,000 homes.
