Collett & Sons Ltd has completed the delivery of 189 wind turbine components for EDF Power Solutions UK’s 102 MW Stranoch wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
The logistics specialist transported components for 20 Vestas turbines comprising nine V150s, seven V136s and four V117s, with all loads arriving via Cairnryan Port. The 8.4-mile journey to the site largely ran along narrow rural single-track roads, demanding careful planning and close coordination because of restricted storage capacity at the port and differing turbine configurations. To transport the components, the company deployed Nooteboom Super Wing Carriers for all blade movements, including 74-metre V150 blades—the longest it has carried in the UK using this type of trailer. Tower sections were carried on Nooteboom tower clamp trailers, while nacelles were moved on step-frame and clamp trailers and hubs and drive trains on six and eight-axle step-frame trailers. Deliveries operated on a double-shift pattern on many weekdays with dedicated police escorts and Collett’s in-house escort fleet supporting each movement. Collett worked closely with EDF Power Solutions UK, Police Scotland, Transport Scotland, Dumfries & Galloway Council and AMEY to ensure safety and minimise local disruption.
Construction began in May 2024, with civil works, road preparation, turbine foundations and electrical infrastructure being delivered by local contractors such as RJ McLeod (Contractors) Limited and I & H Brown, and turbine supply and installation by Vestas. The project also includes community engagement efforts, sponsorship funds, and a long-term community benefit fund and is expected to be operational in late 2026 to early 2027 once all turbines and electrical systems are complete.
