The South Australia’s Planning Council has approved the development of a 500 MW (AC) solar farm project, co-located with 250MW/1,000MWh of battery energy storage from renewables developer EPS Energy.

A massive solar and battery storage project with an AUD1.17 billion (US$822.5 million) price tag has been waved through by the South Australian government. The projects will be built about 115 km northeast of Adelaide.

The power station will be developed in various stages and will be connected to the existing Robertstown Substation via 275kV transmission lines. The initial assessment determines that the facility could potentially export energy to the grid without any significant restraints, but it will incorporate synchronous condensers to support reliability and security of electricity supply.

The Robertstown project is expected to be completed in 2020. Once commissioned, the facility will generate enough electricity to power 144,000 homes during its 30-year life.
