The Department for Planning & Environment of the New South Wales Government in Australia has approved the first stage of the geotechnical works for the AUD300 million (US$210.5 million) Shoalhaven Hydro Expansion project of the Australian utility Origin Energy.
The plan is to upgrade the project from delivering 235 MW to 475 MW of total output. The expansion of Shoalhaven Hydro was declared a Critical State Significant Infrastructure project in 2018.
Origin Energy will now submit an Environmental Impact Statement to the NSW Government before the main upgrade works, involving the construction of a hydroelectric pump and power station, can begin.
