Electrica S.A. Group has launched a tender to build a 35 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) with 70 MWh capacity in Fântânele, Mureș County (central Romania). The scope also includes the construction of a 110 kV/MV electrical substation to integrate the storage system into the grid.
Developers have until 16 July 2025 to submit proposals. This project supports Romania’s broader strategy under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which allocated €80 million in early 2024 to procure about 1.8 GW of energy storage capacity nationwide. In November 2024, an additional €30 million was disbursed to fund ~791 MWh of storage across five projects, equivalent to roughly 20% of Romania’s anticipated storage needs.
