Italy and Greece authorities have announced plans for a 1 GW subsea interconnection cable that will connect a new converter station in Galatina, Italy, with a station in Thesprotia, Greece.
The EUR750 million (US$794.9 million) submarine cable project will establish connections between Italy and Greece using two 250 km-long submarine cables with a capacity of up to 1,000 MW, along with two 50 km-long direct current terrestrial cables. This new interconnection between the Italian peninsula and Greece will enhance the secure management of the entire southern region and facilitate efficient energy supplies. The project's objective is to augment the interconnection capacity between the two countries, which is currently provided by a 400 kV/500 MW submarine cable commissioned in 2022.
Terna, the Italian grid operator, has initiated a public consultation for the project, supported by the Puglia Region and other regional administrations since 2022.
