Ørsted A/S and Highview Power have teamed up to explore the potential of liquid air energy storage technology in Ørsted's offshore wind farms.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a technical analysis and economic assessment to evaluate the feasibility of co-locating Highview Power's long-duration energy storage with offshore wind. The partnership aims to address the UK's growing energy storage problem, which relies heavily on gas and fails to utilize much of the wind energy produced.
Offshore wind farms will play a vital role in helping the UK meet its net-zero carbon target by 2050. However, grid stability is at risk if storage is not used to improve wind farm efficiency. Therefore, the two firms will examine the possibility of merging liquid air energy storage and offshore wind technology to provide an effective energy storage solution that unlocks more opportunities for next-generation wind farms and paves the way for the evolution of the power grid.
