NKT has been awarded a supply contract for the high-voltage DC on- and offshore export cable system to the Hornsea 3 offshore wind project, being developed by Ørsted. This latest contract is estimated to have a market price of around EUR500 million (US$545 million). Under the contract, NKT will design, manufacture, joint, and terminate the cable system in two circuits, which will consist of approximately 170km of 320kV DC offshore cable, 50 km of 320kV DC onshore cable, and four circuits of 1.5km of 400kV AC onshore cable.
As per the contract, the DC system will transmit the power from the wind turbines to the substation, while the AC cables will connect the substation to the national grid. Once Hornsea 3 is completed, the combined capacity of all three Hornsea wind farm projects will exceed 5 GW, resulting in one of the world's largest offshore wind zones, capable of providing power to nearly five million homes in the UK.
The awarding of this contract to NKT by Ørsted highlights the dedication to providing clean and cost-effective energy solutions and moving the country closer to achieving the UK Government's goal of having 50 GW offshore wind in operation by 2030.
