NamPower has put out a tender for the construction of a 70 MW solar power plant in Rosh Pinah, located in the southern part of Namibia. The utility is looking for an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor that can construct, install, and commission the plant. Interested parties are now invited to submit proposals by August 18, 2023.
Initially set up to produce wind energy, the project was intended to produce 40 MW of power. However, reports from local media suggest that it was canceled because the wind resources in Rosh Pinah were lower than expected. NamPower has given its full attention to solar power, and the current project is part of its goal of achieving 220 MW of renewable capacity, with 110 MW generated through solar power alone.
Namibia's latest figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency reveal that the country had 176 MW of installed solar capacity by the end of 2020. With this new initiative, NamPower hopes to increase this capacity and meet the energy demands of the country's growing population sustainably.
