MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, a joint venture of Vestas Wind Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has signed a conditional agreement for the supply and installation of 100 V164-9.5 MW offshore wind turbine generators at the Moray East wind farm, located 22km from the coast of Scotland.
The project is owned by EDP Renewables (EDPR), Engie and Diamond Generating Europe Limited (DGE), a wholly owned UK-based subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation. In 2017 it won a Contract for Difference (CfD) from the UK Government to supply electricity at GBP57.50 (US$74.21) per MWhr, representing a significant cost reduction compared with similar projects under construction today (typically GBP140 (US$180.7) per MWhr).
MHI Vestas was initially announced as the preferred turbine supplier in October 2017. The selected V164-9.5 MW turbines is the most powerful commercially available turbine in the world at present. The company has not disclosed when installation is scheduled to begin.
In May, project company Moray East announced Fraserburgh, located in north-east Aberdeenshire, as the preferred Operations and Maintenance port for the project.
