Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and BLCP Power Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct a feasibility study for ammonia co-firing at a 1,434 MW coal-fired thermal power plant in Rayong, Thailand.
MHI will determine and execute a study on the supply of ammonia burners, boiler facilities, and equipment required for ammonia co-firing. JERA and Mitsubishi Corporation will inspect port facilities, and ammonia receipt and storage facilities, while JERA alone will examine ammonia fuel procurement and transportation. This will contribute to the development of an integrated fuel value chain from purchase through utilization. In addition, BLCP, MHI, Mitsubishi Corporation, and JERA Co., Inc. will conduct studies and develop strategies to achieve up to 20% ammonia co-firing to reduce CO2 emissions and decarbonize.
In 2006 and 2007, the thermal power plant, a joint venture (50:50) between Banpu Power Public Company Limited (BPP) and Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group), began operating two subcritical coal-fired boilers. MHI supplied the boilers, steam turbines, and other main facilities of the power station.
