INPEX and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) have signed a joint collaboration agreement to explore the potential development of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.
The project aims to capture CO2 emissions from sources in Sarawak, Malaysia, including gas fields with high concentrations of CO2, petrochemical industries, power plants, manufacturing industries, and others. The objective of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Sarawak and accelerate the decarbonization of the state's industries, as well as the entire country of Malaysia.
The CCS process involves capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes before they are released into the atmosphere, transporting the CO2 via pipelines and vessels, and storing the CO2 in underground geological formations, where it is closely monitored and managed. INPEX and PETROS will conduct a feasibility study of the project, which will include identifying appropriate CCS technologies and methodologies, selecting target facilities, and assessing the economic and operational aspects of the project.
The ultimate goal of the two companies is to build economically viable CCS solutions that target large-scale emitters in Sarawak, Malaysia.
