IberBlue Wind has unveiled its plan to build the 990 MW La Pinta floating offshore wind project off the Granada and Almeria coasts, in Spain. The more than EUR2.5 billion (US$2.7 billion) farm will be equipped with up to 55 turbines each with 18 MW of capacity.
The innovative and carbon-free floating technology will cover a distance between 15-35 km from the Spanish coast, occupying an area of over 316 km². The farm is set to generate enough clean energy to power 670,000 homes in the country and has been named as a tribute to Christopher Columbus, who used one of the three ships to make a trip to America called La Pinta.
Iberdrola has made an initial submission of the technical characteristics of the farm to Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The project aims to support the Spanish government in achieving a goal of installing 1-3 GWs of energy by the year 2030. The new offshore wind farm is set to be a major contributor to Spain's green energy goal, helping to reduce carbon emissions and curb climate change.
