China state-owned Sinohydro is partnering with Gulf Energy Development to develop a 770 MW Pak Lay hydroelectric power project in Laos on the Mekong River.
The project will be constructed along the 4,909 kilometers Mekong River and will be based on run-of-the-river hydroelectric technology. This method allows the developer to utilize the natural flow of the river to generate electricity.
The state-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) will purchase the energy produced from the plant at an average tariff of THB2.69 per kWh (US$80.64/MWh).
