The Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) has launched a dedicated Seabird Resilience theme to address the significant challenges facing Scotland's seabird populations. This initiative is supported by voluntary contributions from offshore wind developers, including the Stromar Offshore Wind Farm consortium—comprising Ørsted, BlueFloat Energy, and Nadara (formerly Renantis)—as well as other ScotWind projects such as Bellrock, Broadshore, and Muir Mhòr.
SMEEF's Seabird Resilience theme aims to fund projects that improve seabird populations and protect their habitats, responding to threats like food scarcity, invasive predators, and diseases such as avian flu. Since its inception, SMEEF has distributed over £3.8 million to approximately 54 marine enhancement projects across Scotland, with more than £4 million (US$ 5.3 million) pledged by private companies for future initiatives.
Ørsted has decided to discontinue the Hornsea 4 project in the UK in its current form.
