Haina Electricity Generating Company (EGE Haina) has started the commercial operation of the 90 MW solar photovoltaic facility located in the Esperanza municipality, Valverde province, Dominican Republic.

With an investment of approximately US$94 million dollars, this new plant will generate an estimated 200,000 MWh annually, enough to supply the demand of more than 80,000 homes each year. The Esperanza Solar Park was built on a 180-hectare plot of land. Of this area, 25% was preserved, to preserve the endemic vegetation of the area, maintain natural drainage, and minimize the impact of earth movement during the development of the project.

The Esperanza Solar Park is made up of a total of 166,670 bifacial solar panels, which allow receiving solar radiation to produce energy through its two faces. In turn, the panels have a system of solar position trackers that rotate 104 degrees depending on the displacement of the sun, to guarantee better use of the irradiation of the area, which is higher than the average for the Dominican Republic. The solar park will prevent the importation of 330,000 barrels of oil each year and the emission into the atmosphere of 125,000 tons of CO₂, thus reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to the country’s energy security.
