The Cooma Solar Power Project in Zambia has officially commenced construction. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this 60 MW solar facility, complemented by a 20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), is poised to deliver clean electricity to over 65,000 households and businesses.
The project is a collaborative effort between Zambia's GEI Power and Turkey's YEO Teknoloji Enerji ve Endustri, operating under the special purpose vehicle Cooma Solar Power Plant Limited. Located in the Choma District of Southern Province, the facility is expected to commence commercial operations by September 2025.
UNDP's involvement, through initiatives like the Energy for Growth in Africa (E4G) and the Platform for Investment Support and Technical Assistance (PISTA), has been instrumental in advancing the project. Their support encompasses transaction advisory services, enhancements to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), and the development of a Gender Action Plan (GAP), ensuring the project's alignment with investor requirements and inclusive development goals.
