GreenCo Power Services has signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 25 MW Ilute photovoltaic solar project in Sesheke, Western Province, Zambia.
The PPA is set to be executed with Serengeti Energy, an independent power producer based in Nairobi, and local entity Western Solar Power. Western Solar Power emerged as the successful bidder in GreenCo's 2021 tender for the plant's development. GreenCo, the renewable energy buyer and trader, became the first entity of its kind to join the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). Its objective is to introduce competition into electricity markets by steering away from the prevailing single-buyer model. The Ilute power plant marks the inaugural greenfield project in GreenCo's portfolio for power offtake.
The United Nations (UN) has given Zambia and Zimbabwe approval to build the 2400 MW Batoka Gorge hydroelectric scheme (BGHES) downstream from Victoria Falls.
