TotalEnergies and its partners have launched the construction of a 216 MW solar plant and a 500 MWh battery storage system in Northern Cape province, South Africa.
The facility is set to provide consistent renewable electricity to the South African national grid for two decades, generating more than 400 GWh annually. According to the Power Purchase Agreement, the initiative will deliver 75 MW of reliable power to Eskom, the national utility. The consortium driving the project includes TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%), and Reatile Renewables (30%), a B-BBEE2 partner. This endeavor is part of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, initiated by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to enhance electricity generation capacity and address the country's power supply challenges.
