ACWA Power has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with state-owned utility Eskom for a 442 MW solar facility with 1200 MWh of battery storage (Project DAO) in Northern Cape province, South Africa.
The Project DAO, with a total expenditure of USD 800 million, encompasses a substantial transmission integration component, involving upgrades to Transmission Substation capacity and the establishment of a new distribution station. This infrastructure will enable grid access for other renewable projects in the region, mitigating Northern Cape grid congestion.
ACWA Power leads the investor consortium, joined by Thebe Investment Corporation Pty Ltd. and Aventro Investments Pty Ltd., all with notable involvement in renewable energy initiatives. Project DAO, selected among eight projects, is part of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), aimed at addressing the country's electricity supply gap. Operations are set to commence in Q2 2026, contributing substantial dispatchable capacity to the grid.
