South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has invited bids for the second bid window of the Battery Energy Storage Capacity Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP).
The initiative involves the deployment of 615 MW storage capacity across eight locations adjacent to current substation sites, namely: Mercury, Carmel, Hermes, Ngwedi, Midas, Marang, and Bighorn. The contracted generation capacity varies from 77 MW to 153 MW for 4 hours. The BESIPPPP includes provisions for extended power purchase agreements spanning up to 15 years.
