Agence Française de Développement (AFD) has signed a ZAR 125 million (US$7 million) grant agreement with South African utility Eskom to support the development of a hydro storage system project to be built in Elias Motsoaledi, Limpopo, South Africa.
The project will have a power capacity of 1.5 GW, consisting of four units at 375 MW each, along with a 21 GWh storage capacity. Eskom intends to develop it as a public-private partnership, with a feasibility study on private-sector involvement planned for early 2026. Project implementation is expected to run from 2025 to 2033.
