Huaneng, a Chinese state-owned energy company, Tsinghua University and the China National Salt Industry Group have commissioned the first salt cavern for compressed air energy storage in China.

The Jiangsu Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Project is located in Changzhou, Jiangsu province. It has a 300 MWh storage capacity and a 60 MW power generation capability.

The facility includes a 1,000-meter-underground salt cavern owned by the China National Salt Industry Group. The system has an efficiency of more than 60% and is predicted to generate 1 GW of electricity. Huaneng Group built and now operates the plant.
