The State Grid Corporation of China has begun operations at the Fengning complex, a 3.6 GW pumped storage hydropower plant in China’s Hebei province.
With a CNY19.2 billion (US$3.02 billion) investment, the plant is claimed to be the world’s largest power station in terms of capacity. The generated electricity will help China meet the electricity requirements of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which are scheduled to begin in February 2022.
Located in Fengning County, the plant is equipped with 12 pump generating sets with 300 MW of capacity each, stationed at an underground location. China Gezhouba Group has developed the project in two phases, with 1.8 GW of capacity installed in each phase.
