China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Group) has started the construction of its CNY3 billion (US$471 million) hydrogen production complex located in the city of Kuqa in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

The hydrogen electrolyzer will be powered by a 300 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant. The project can produce up to 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The facility has a spherical hydrogen storage tank that can store 210,000 standard cubic meters of hydrogen as well as hydrogen transmission pipelines that can supply 28,000 cubic meters per hour.

The project is expected to enter commercial operation in June 2023. The output of the hydrogen plant will be supplied to Sinopec Tahe Refining & Chemical.
